Promoting Research Initiatives

When I am asked what's one important thing people overlook in building a successful career, my response is simple and straightforward: good mentors. A good mentor is someone senior than you in the profession who wants best for you and is willing to take the time to show you the ropes. I have been fortunate to have good mentors throughout my career, especially during my PhD at Trulaske College of Business | University of Missouri. I am always surprised at the number of people who don't understand or appreciate the importance of a good mentor. For my friends in academia who are PhD scholars or junior faculty, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of finding a good advisor whose advice you trust and value. Good mentors don't just give you good career advice and socioemotional support, they also tell you about things - big and small - you need to change or improve in yourself. If you don't have a good mentor, it is worth finding one.
